Air fryer chocolate chip cookies ready to serve

An air fryer is useful when you want a small batch of chocolate chip cookies without heating a full oven. Its strong fan can brown the tops quickly, so these cookies use a moderate temperature and small, evenly flattened dough portions. Bake in two rounds and leave room for spreading. The cookies will be soft when hot and firm as they cool.

What makes this method work

Cream softened butter with the sugars, then mix in one egg yolk for a compact eight-cookie batch. Weigh the flour so the dough is neither greasy nor dry. A short refrigerator rest slows spreading. Use only a fitted baking surface approved for your model, and never preheat with loose, unweighted parchment in the basket.

Ingredients and useful choices

  • Butter: Softened butter should hold its shape and yield to a finger; melted butter changes spreading.
  • Flour: Use 95 g, or spoon and level approximately 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon. Cup measurements vary, so the weight is preferable.
  • Egg yolk: This batch needs one large yolk, not a whole egg. Save the white for another use.

Small evenly flattened portions bake more predictably than tall scoops in strong air-fryer heat.

Time, portions and basket space

This recipe yields 8 cookies; one portion is one cookie. Preparation: about 15 minutes. Cooking allowance: about 20 minutes; chilling and cooling: 25 minutes. Total planning time: approximately 60 minutes.

Allow 20 minutes of chilling plus about 5 minutes of setting time; baking two rounds takes roughly 16–20 minutes. A very small basket may fit only two cookies per round.

Small-Batch Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons (57 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 95 g all-purpose flour (approximately 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon, spooned and leveled)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine salt (0.75 g)
  • 1/3 cup (60 g) chocolate chips

Equipment

  • Air fryer with approved baking insert or liner
  • Kitchen scale
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Beat the softened butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar for 1–2 minutes until smooth and slightly lighter. Beat in the egg yolk and vanilla.
  2. Whisk flour, baking soda and salt separately. Fold into the butter mixture just until combined, then fold in the chocolate chips. Do not eat raw dough.
  3. Divide into 8 equal portions, about 38 g each, and flatten to discs about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) thick. Chill for 20 minutes.
  4. Use a manufacturer-approved fitted baking insert or a securely weighted liner with the cookies placed on it. Do not preheat with loose parchment. Set to 320°F (160°C), using the bake setting if available. Arrange four cookies with at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) between centers, or fewer if necessary.
  5. Bake for 8–10 minutes, checking at 7 minutes. Edges should be set and golden and the centers no longer look wet. Leave on the insert for 5 minutes to set before transferring carefully to a rack. Repeat with the remaining dough, keeping it chilled until needed.

Notes

Planning times depend on batch size, thickness and appliance. Allow 20 minutes of chilling plus about 5 minutes of setting time; baking two rounds takes roughly 16–20 minutes. A very small basket may fit only two cookies per round. Nutrition is an ingredient-based estimate per serving (one cookie). Per one of 8 equal cookies, using all ingredients and semisweet chocolate chips. Portion size and chocolate brand change the values. Questions and troubleshooting

Why are the tops dark but the bottoms soft?

Air fryers heat strongly from above. Use smaller, evenly flattened portions and a moderate temperature. An approved shallow baking insert can provide a more stable base than a flexible liner.

Can I bake only two now?

Yes. Keep the remaining dough covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freeze portions for up to 2 months. Frozen dough needs a separately adjusted cooking time.

Storage and reheating

Cool completely before storing airtight at room temperature for up to 3 days. Freeze baked cookies for up to 2 months. Thaw covered so the surface does not dry out.

Air-fryer fans and bake settings vary. King Arthur Baking explains how air-fryer settings affect cookies, including why checking before the usual oven time matters.
